Paul Whitfield Collection Performs Well at Mallams’ Country House Sale

03/07/2023

Robust bidding at Mallams’ 28 June Cheltenham Country House Sale resulted in total sales of £94,180, just 4% below the high estimate.

A number of items from the art collection of the well-known auctioneer and collector, Paul Whitfield (1942-2018), were included and these accounted for the top three lots in the sale.

The highest achiever was lot 4, a bronze model of a standing male figure dating from the early 20th century.  Measuring 27.5cm high, it had a modest estimate of just £60 - £100 but proved to be very popular with bidders, who pushed the price ever upwards, with the hammer finally falling at £4200 to an online UK bidder.

Selling to the same bidder was lot 8 - a bronze bust of a gentleman, possibly James Whistler, with his head turned slightly to the left. Dating from circa 1900, it had a guide of £80-£120 but eventually went for £3600.

A pair of full length, oil on canvas portraits (lot 43) attributed to George Henry Harlow (1787-1819) also performed well, going to a MallamsLive UK bidder for £3200, almost 7% above the top estimate.

Another item of note was a Chinese, red lacquered cabinet and stand, decorated with gilt pagodas, figures, various flowers, foliage, birds and animals (lot 170), which sold to a UK phone bidder for £3000, double its low estimate.

A late 17th century Italian School oil painting of Saint Gerome (lot 109) which came to Mallams from a Gloucestershire country home, also attracted bidders’ attention. Measuring 123 x 93cm and displayed in a gilt frame it sailed past its £300 - £500 estimate, with bid of £2200 sealing the deal.

Robin Fisher, Mallams’ Director said “We had a good combination of items from two large estates with interest throughout on an international level.”
