Homage to the Cotswolds

05/04/2024

It was another successful sale for Mallams last week with the Cotswold Living auction taking place on Wednesday the 27th of March. This sale, previously titled 'Modern Living' has recently had its name updated to pay homage to its location in Cheltenham and its inclusion of Cotswolds School and Arts and Crafts pieces including Gordon Russell of Broadway. The lead-up to the sale saw two busy days of viewing and a large amount of interest in items.

Lot 142, 'SP-VI', a Josef Albers (1888-1976) screenprint, numbered 45/125, signed and dated 1967 was one of the top performing lots of the sale. The screenprint was consistent with Albers' signature 'Homage to the Square' series that the German-born American artist worked on for 25 years until his death. The print attracted attention in the lead-up to the sale. Estimated at £200-£400, it eventually sold for £1,300 to an online bidder.

The top-performing lot of the sale was lot 143, an oil on panel painting titled 'West End Street, Somerset' by Arthur Karl Maderson (b. 1942). Visitors enjoyed viewing the piece, which was put centrally on display at the Cheltenham saleroom. With an estimate of £1,000 to £2,000, the piece eventually sold for £3,600 to an online bidder.

Numerous Luciano Ercolani (1888-1976) Ercol furniture pieces were offered in the sale. Amongst these was lot 23, an elm and beech extended dining table together with eight hoop back spindle chairs. During viewing days visitors enjoyed trying out the set. With an estimate of £300 to £500, the lot sold for £1,500 to an online bidder.

Mallams was pleased to offer lot 240, 'Life face', three numerical embossed prints by Tatsuo Miyajima (b. 1957), one of Japan's most renowned contemporary artists, known for his pieces that incorporate numbers. Estimated at £200 - £400, the lot sold for £800 to an online bidder.

Lot 286, oil on panel titled 'River in Woodbridge' signed and dated, by Thomas Churchyard (1798-1865) also attracted attention in the lead-up to the sale. With an estimate of £300-£500, the painting sold for £700 to a UK telephone bidder.
