'Mare and Foals in a River Landscape' is part of a group of paintings of the same subject, mostly produced between 1760 and 1769. The paintings were completed for various aristocratic patrons and were studies of specific mares that were famous for their success in racing or for being the mares of successful racehorses.

With craquelure and small losses. With signs of wear consistent with age and use. Evidence of an old label on the back of the frame. Canvas stretchers with natural imperfections of the wood.
