Ervin Bossányi (1891-1975)
Cows at Hoheneichen, Hamburg, circa 1930
inscribed and titled (to reverse)
oil on plywood
35 x 45cm.
A scene near the Bossanyi family home at Hoheneichen (Wellingsbüttel) near Hamburg, where they moved from Lübeck in 1929. Bossanyi was receiving more and more commissions for artworks for public buildings in Lübeck and Hamburg, many from the Hamburg city architect Fritz Schumacher, whose ideals he shared: art for the many, not for the few. Although he was working and experimenting a great deal in different styles and media – ceramics, murals, stained glass, bronze – Bossanyi continued to paint scenes evoking his youth in rural Hungary, close to the natural world and the simple peasant lifestyle, which he was glad to be able to enjoy even near a big city like Hamburg. |
Sold for £500
Estimated at £100 - £200
