Ervin Bossányi (1891-1975)

Portrait of the artist's older brother Károly, 1907

Károly (Charles) and Ervin were very close. Both were interned as enemy aliens in World War One, Karoly while studying landscape architecture in England with Thomas Mawson, Ervin while studying in Paris. Károly was released in 1917 when the UK government needed labour on fruit farms, and tragically died soon after during the Spanish Flu pandemic, probably from underlying health complications. He was just 27.

Face with four raised notches/damage to the canvas. Scattered surface dirt, marks and little specks. Reverse has an extra piece of canvas the size of a standard plaster stuck as a reinforcement.
Signature lower right although half hidden in frame.
Frame with many knocks, damages, scratches.
