Ervin Bossányi (1891-1975)
Self Portrait, Aged 16, Budapest, 1907
signed and dated (lower right), inscribed and titled (to reverse)
oil on canvas laid onto the board
34 x 24cm.
Ervin didn't think he was a good portraitist but early ones like this showed much promise (he was also good with caricatures). His talent having been recognised early on by his parents, he went at the age of 14 to study at the Hungarian Royal School of Applied Arts, where he made lifelong friends, including Imre Szobotka, with whom he was interned during WW1 in Brittany. He gained an important travelling scholarship to study in Italy, England and France, where (like his brother Károly studying in England) he found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time when WW1 broke out and Hungary allied with Germany.
Sold for £1,300
Estimated at £300 - £500
