Galileo Chini was a painter and ceramicist who attended the Scuole Professionali d'Arte di Santa Croce a Firenze. In 1897 he found L'Arte della Ceramica in Florence with Vittoria Giunta and was inspired by the work of Oriental potters and the paintings of Gustav Klimt. Chini specialised in stoneware vases with lustre decoration in rich luscious tones and was known for high quality pieces which had a profound effect on the development of Italian ceramics of the period.
