Staffordshire based garden historian Peter Hayden was the author of Biddulph Grange: A Garden Rediscovered and a contributor to The Oxford Companion to Gardens, The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, The Garden, Landscape Design and Country Life.  During National Service in the Intelligence Corps he trained as a Russian interpreter.  His research into Russian gardens culminated in Russian Parks and Gardens (2005).  In 2006 he was awarded a Gold Medal by the Russian Academy of Arts, the first foreigner to receive the award since it was introduced by Catherine the Great in the Eighteenth Century.  His interests – including horticulture, topography, local history and cookery – are reflected in his extensive private library.
