Literature: Peter Cannon-Brookes, Michael Ayrton: An Illustrated Commentary, Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 1978, p.15. In late 1943 a new maturity could by found in Ayrton's work, and during this period one of the principal sources of inspiration was a new enchantment with the English landscape. This increasing Romanticism is found in El Desdicahdo painted in April-May 1944. Inspired by Don Quixote, this work shows his deep knowledge and interest in classical and historic texts and also the deep impression that Paul Nash's late landscapes made on his work of this period, in his direct response to nature in works such as Landscape of the Vernal Equniox (1943) and Landscape of the Summer Solstice (1943).
