Information:
Mavis Wheeler, the former wife of both Sir Mortimer Wheeler and Horace de Vere Cole, and the mistress of Augustus John, was jailed for six months for shooting her lover, Lord Anthony Vivian in the abdomen.
She came from a humble background and started work at a Mill, aged 14; but she soon found herself moving in very different social circle. She married Horace de Vere Cole, England's greatest practical joker, and was for many years the tempestuous mistress of Augustus John. She married Mortimer Wheeler and was divorced. Then came the shock of her trial, gleefully billed in the papers of 'The Love Court Drama of the Century (Roderic Owen with Tristan de Vere Cole, Beautiful and Beloved).
