Many who knew her considered Anna Airy one of the most gifted English women artists. She was a prolific painter and mastered a variety of mediums including oil, watercolour, and etching. Her choice of subject matter was as diverse as her mediums, and she was held in high regard for this eclecticism. The Royal Society of British Artists held a ‘jubilee’ exhibition honouring her great talent, entitled Anna Airy: Paintings, Drawings, and Prints in 1952. The current lot is the first of a series of Anna Airy paintings that have come directly from the artist.
